Atlyss Beginners Progression Guide

A basic Progression guide meant for beginners, giving helpful advice and tips to people who are struggling with a portion of the game due to not having optimal gear! Will feature the recommended quest orders, how to get a class, the weapon and armor progression, and combat tips! This guide goes all the way up to the first boss you will(/should) encounter!

Starting Off

Your character spawns in the sanctum!

This is really only important if you have absolutely ZERO idea what to do upon starting

The sanctum will be the current main hub for Atlyss!

The first thing you should do is head straight forwards to the large tower in front of you, and speak to the magical goat lady. There she will introduce herself and open up a menu to start the first quest titled "A Warm Welcome"

Atlyss A Warm Welcome

After this quest is accepted, you will be required to go to different areas on the sanctum, which includes:

  • The World Portal, located in the middle of Angela's Tower
  • The Shop, located to the left of the sanctum with a large green sign. Hard to miss
  • The Gateway, located to the right of the sanctum, guarded by two NPCs
  • The Barracks, located to the left past the shop. There will be a bridge and path that leads to this area!
  • There is also the Enchanting Room located next to the shop, and a Gambler located behind the shop, but this isn't part of the quest

Once you go inside all of these areas, talk to Angela again, and press complete quest!

Once finished, you will be rewarded with the Newfold Halo, which can be seen in your inventory by pressing "I"

To equip this halo, right click it, and press "Equip"

Atlyss Equip

Congrats! You did the most basic quest!

Quests can also be taken from Sally, in the shop, and Enok, in the barracks, by clicking the "Got Quests?" dialogue option!

Ridding the Catacombs (Level 1-6)

Time for your first dungeon!

BUT WAIT!
I really do recommend you to level up first!

Your first Levels

After completing the "A Warm Welcome" quest, you get 3 quests.

One of them is the story quest, Communing Catacombs

But you will also get two extra quests under the Repeatable Quests section!

"Night Spirits" and "Ridding Slimes" are good starting quests to level you up before going into the catacombs, because without experience, you might have a little trouble!

Of course, you can go right in while being level 1 with what you have. Its still possible!

If you decide to try and prepare a bit and explore around the outer sanctum, here's some things to look out for!

Both Slimes and Wisps have a chance to drop some pretty useful early gear!

Here is their loot table:

CreepWeaponsArmorTrade Items
SlimesSlimecrust Blade, Slimecrust KatarsWooden Shield, Slimecrust Chest, Slimecrust LeggingsSlime Core, Slime Ears, Rock
WispsSplitbark ScepterWorn RobeRock, Ghostdust

If you want to see the exact stats of these items and what they look like, as well as any other future items you could get, you can visit the Atlyss Wiki!

After a bit of farming, you should have completed these quests to level up and gain Skill and Attribute points!

Both can be set up for your personal preference, but I personally recommend to put 1 Skill point in Vitality until it reaches around 12 points in total, and the rest to go towards what your class utilizes! (Fighter = Strength, Bandit = Dexterity, Mystic = Mind)

As for skills, currently you should only have 3:

  • Recovery
  • Rock Toss
  • Your Racial Skill

For your first few levels, go all out on recovery as its what you'll be healing with most of the time at the beginning of the game until you can properly stock up on Bunjars! Any other skill points I wouldn't recommend for any of the racial skills, but its completely up to you! Some people consider the racial skills pretty useful, but you'll likely find atleast one spell scroll in the catacombs

Communing the Catacombs

Now that you are (hopefully) prepared, head towards the Outer Sanctum and look for a little crypt up the ledges. It should look like this:

Atlyss a little crypt

When you go inside you should eventually meet a waypoint that has a strange orange crystal inside of it. Go touch the crystal to mark the Waypoint. Now you can quick-travel here from the World Portal inside of the Sanctum!

Atlyss orange crystal

Heading down even further, you should finally encounter the Catacombs Portal

Use your interact button to pop up the menu, where it will show all of the difficulties. The one you'll want to enter is the LVL 1-6 Dungeon (Which should be the only selectable one unless you grinded XP up to level 6)

Atlyss Catacombs Portal

Now, the dungeon is in random patterns, and I won't explain how to get through each of them, but most of them should just be a linear path!

Some things to note though, if you are stuck, you likely need to find a Lever or a Key to open up a door! And any rooms full of purple smoke means enemies will spawn upon entering, forcing you to clear a few waves before being able to continue on! When beating these waves, doors will re-open and chests may spawn offering decent loot!

You should also find and gather a bunch of loot from this dungeon that way, giving you access to new weapons, armors, and consumables! If you wan't the full loot tables, check here!

As you continue through the dungeon, you will want to look for the Sigil to attune in order to complete the quest.

DO NOT LEAVE THE DUNGEON WITHOUT ATTUNING THE SIGIL

The sigil will be in the shape of an eye, and in order to attune it, you should just be able to go up with it and press your interaction button!

Atlyss The sigil

Once you do that, you can either press your return hotkey (Usually G) to leave the dungeon early and complete the quest to Angela, OR you can finish the dungeon and try to gather more loot!

If you decide to stay, you will know youve reached the final room if you see a blue portal at the end. Approach the portal and interact with it to be warped back to the Catacombs! After that, press your return key or walk back to the sanctum to complete the quest to angela!

Your First Boss

Congrats on beating your first dungeon!

Once you have completed the quest to Angela, she will offer you two new quests. "Effold Terrace" and "Rattlecage Rage" (and "Hunting Hogs" if you are level 7)

You can accept any quest, but I do not recommend the level 6-12 Catacombs until you are atleast level 10! I will discuss why in a moment but around this time, I am assuming you are around level 5-8, and are on your way to kill the Slimeks! But where is that exactly?

Head down to the outer sanctum and go north of where the cliffs were. Past the catacombs, you should find the teleporter to lead you to the Effold Terrace!

Atlyss Effold Terrace

Once inside, just head foreward, use your gear you obtained from the Catacombs, and kill 15 of them! They shouldn't be a big problem as long as you don't gather a large horde on you.

Once finished, return back to Angela, and accept the quest "Diva must Die"

Diva must Die

Time for your first boss!

In order to fight Slime Diva, go back to the Effold Terrace and reach the arena on your left. It should have a gate with cute little slime glyphs on the front:

Atlyss Slime Diva

After killing about 8 Slimeks, the Slime Diva should spawn. If you struggle with taking her down, try playing it safe and only hitting her right after she does an attack, or focus on ranged attacks such as Scepters, Bells, Bows, and Rock Throwing

If you want to see a full list of her attacks and drops, check it out here!

Congrats! You just beat your first boss! Well, if you didn't decide to go to the level 6-12 catacombs. Speaking of which...

Rattlecage Rage

You might have gotten hasty and went into the normal-difficulty catacombs. Oopsie!

The catacombs work the exact same, with the only difference in the difficulties being new enemies, new gear, and a new boss!

There isn't much to explain here other than it will be ALOT harder if not fully prepared! My recommendation for taking the normal catacombs on is to be atleast Level 10 and have Lvl-7+ equipment and gear!

If you do not have any, you can buy some from Sally's shop when you reach level 7! Sally's shop upgrades as you level up!

Of course, you can try to take on this dungeon beforehand. You can probably get through the waves of enemies, but the boss at the end, Lord Zuulneruda, will be a bit difficult to take on if you do not have a class selected. But still possible!

Reaching Level 10

Congrats, you can now get a class!

So, how do you get a class?

When reaching level 10, Angela, Sally, and Enok will all have new quests that give a Class Tome and special Weapon Proficiency scrolls!

  • Angela for Mystics
  • Sally for Bandits
  • Enok for Fighters

Do NOT rush and use a Tome without thinking about it, as of right now, classes are NOT reversible!

When accepting their Class Tome quests, you will be given the Tome into your Consumables inventory, as well as a new armor set just for your class!

Atlyss Class Tome

You can also get Mastery scrolls to fix up your weapons proficiency, allowing you to upgrade passive bonuses for your weapons such as attack speed or new special attacks!

What class should I pick?

It all depends on your play-style!

  • Mystics are the squishiest class, but have alot of skills that consume mana to cast powerful ranged attacks and utility skills (such as healing!) I recommend this class for your first run as its really easy to learn and stay safe with! Their default weapons are Scepters and Bells, but with a Flux Stone, you can go up to Vivian and change a weapons proficiency!

  • Bandits are a very mobile class, with alot of their skills relying on movement and dodging to work. Set traps, hit from afar, kite enemies, and dodge well! This class has a mixed variety of skills and is what I consider the most fun class! Their default weapons are Katars and Bows, but with an Agility Stone, you can go up to Vivian and change their proficiency!

  • Fighters are the most simple class out of all of them. Just whack ♥♥♥♥! They have high defense and can deal good damage and can block more than usual with their Bulwark passive skill and high stamina! This class is perfect to try and learn enemy movements, but being close is always the most dangerous option! Their default weapons are the Swords, Hammers, and Polearms, but with a Might stone you can go up to Vivian and yada yada yea you read it already

Atlyss new skills

Now pick your preferred weapons and set up your new skills in the skills tab! I don't have any recommendation as they are all meant for a specific play-style! (Except volley. Its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥)

Skills are not permanent! You can remove skills from your Novice slot by right clicking their icons while in the Sanctum and pressing "Unlearn Skill". You can also reset all your skill points by buying a "Tome of Unlearning" from Sally!

But what do I do now?

The same thing you've done before! Go up to Angela and check up on any new quests! New quests might require you to be a higher level, so go check with other NPCs and see if there's any more business to be taken care of!

Once you are level 10, Enok should have a quest to kill the Catacombs boss, Lord Zuulneruda (So sorry if you beat him so early on and now have to do it again)

You can also craft weapons with Sally!

Make sure to read whatever they say in their quests though! If you ever get lost, press your quest key (L) to open up the Quests menu and be able to read through them! They usually give instructions, sometimes vague, on what to do and where to go.

Now that you have your class and understand the gameplay loop of Atlyss, continue on without me!

If you ever need any further help, be sure to ask the community and check up on the Atlyss Wiki!

Extra Tips

Still Struggling?

Here's some things I can tell you that you either don't know or couldn't figure out, and should help you through the rest of the game!

  • Spike the Chest's inventory saves throughout all your characters. You can make a new character, and everything you kept inside of him from a previous character will still be in there!
  • Blocking has a very forgiving Parry window. Pay attention to the enemies attacks, they will usually turn pink or do a special animation before attacking, giving you time to parry!
  • Minimum level requirements are not recommended level requirements! Going into the Hardmode catacombs at level 12 is a bad idea especially if you plan to take down the boss, Lord Razuul! Just because you CAN go in doesn't mean you should, especially when you can't use most of the gear you'd get from the dungeon anyways!
  • Always keep up with new gear. If you are level 14, you shouldn't be using level 7 weapons and armor! Every new area you unlock will feature some type of new gear to collect to match your level, all based off of what level you were when unlocking access to that area!
  • Sally's Shop upgrades at level 7 and level 15! This helps you keep up with newer gear if you can't find any suitable upgrades throughout leveling!
  • Get modifiers on gear! You can go to Vivian and spend Crowns and trade items to enchant your current gear, giving you special modifiers! There's multiple modifiers that do different things, so try to aim for one that goes with your current build!
  • Stay steady in combat! Something I have noticed with new players is they will constantly be moving when swinging weapons, making them miss alot of their shots even with wide-range weapons like Hammers and Polearms. Its okay to stand still! Just make sure to know when to block!
  • You can block in the middle of attacking. You do not have to worry about waiting for your attack animation to end before blocking!
  • You can move while blocking. You can even dash! So if you know you are about to get hit multiple times, but need to zoom out of trouble, just block and dash!
  • Multiplayer makes dungeons harder! To balance difficulty, every player in your party that accompanies you in a dungeon will make it ever so slightly more difficult, causing enemies to be alot tankier than if you were to take them on by yourself!
